Kristallnacht took place 84 years ago today but despite decades of effort, not enough has been done to end the scapegoating and discrimination, said President Metsola. She reiterated Parliament’s commitment to fight hate, teach tolerance and respect, combat anti-Semitism and to always remember. The anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall on 9 November 1989 reminds us of the importance of fighting for freedom, unity and democracy, she said.

The situation in Iran has deteriorated even further, said the President, with calls for imprisoned women to be sentenced to death. President Metsola has urged High Representative Borrell to take a firm stance; an international investigation is needed to keep the oppressive regime accountable for its ongoing human rights violations. It is now time to impose further targeted sanctions, she concluded.
