Portugal has fulfilled its commitments and has a new government that is also pro-European and engaged in respecting them, its President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa told the European Parliament in a formal address on Wednesday. The Head of State highlighted the "historical capacity of the Portuguese to withstand crises and personal sacrifices" to the benefit of internal and external financial balances, stressed the need for stability and praised Portugal's role in receiving refugees.

Mr Rebelo de Sousa was elected President on 24 January 2016.
