Parliament launches investigation into compliance by Alliance for Peace and Freedom with EU founding principles
A procedure to investigate whether the European political party Alliance for Peace and Freedom (APF) complies with the founding principles of the EU was launched on Thursday by the European Parliament Conference of Presidents (EP President and political group leaders).
Having received the requisite number of signatures by MEPs (a minimum of a quarter of all MEPs) from four political groups (EPP, the S&D, ALDE and GUE/NGL), the Conference of Presidents will ask the Committee on Constitutional Affairs to verify whether or not a political party at European level is continuing (particularly in its programme and in its activities) to observe the principles upon which the European Union is founded, namely the principles of liberty, democracy, respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms, and the rule of law" (Rule 225 of the European Parliament Rules of Procedure).
The Constitutional Affairs Committee will hear representatives of the APF and seek the opinion of "a committee of independent eminent persons". It will then submit a proposal to the full Parliament for a decision on whether the APF has complied with the criteria for being recognised as a European political party and thus for receiving funding from the Parliament or not.
