MEPs to take stock of the political and human rights situation in Belarus

The tense political and human rights situation in Belarus will be discussed by Members on the Foreign Affairs Committee and Subcommittee on Human Rights on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Members on the Subcommittee on Human Rights and invited experts will debate the international efforts to investigate human rights abuses and seek justice for victims in Belarus, following the fraudulent presidential elections of 9 August, on Tuesday 1 December at 14.45 CET. Here is the agenda.

Guest speakers expected to address MEPs are:

  • Anaïs Marin, UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Belarus;
  • Wolfgang Benedek, rapporteur for the OSCE's report under the Moscow Mechanism on alleged human rights violations related to the presidential elections of 9 August in Belarus;
  • Eugenia Andreyuk, human rights lawyer, expert of the International Committee on Investigation of Torture and expert of Anti-Discrimination Centre Memorial.


The debate, which will be held via videoconference, is organised jointly with the Foreign Affairs Committee and in association with the delegations for relations with Belarus and with the Euronest Parliamentary Assembly.

"A united EU response in support of democratic change in Belarus"

The following day, on Wednesday 2 December at 16.45 CET, the dramatic political situation in Belarus will also be discussed by Members on the Foreign Affairs Committee and national parliamentarians from EU member states during an inter-parliamentary committee meeting titled: "A united EU response in support of democratic change in Belarus."

During the debate, participants will also be joined by Belarusian opposition leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, European Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement Olivér Várhelyi and Enrique Mora, Deputy Secretary General for Political Affairs at the European External Action Service.
