Climate Law
. MEPs are set to adopt the new EU Climate Law, which increases the EU’s 2030 emissions reductions target from 40% to at least 55% and transforms political promises that the EU will become climate neutral by 2050 into a binding obligation. After 2050, the EU shall aim to achieve negative emissions. (debate and vote Thursday)


Greener funds for regional development and cooperation
. Parliament is expected to give its green light to three EU funds -worth 243 billion euro- to strengthen the EU’s economic, social and territorial cohesion. They will focus on climate action, social programmes, sustainable urban development and supporting recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic (debate Wednesday, vote Thursday).


Access to sexual and reproductive health
. Parliament will debate and vote on a report urging member states to protect and further enhance women’s sexual and reproductive health and rights. MEPs are set to call for access to safe and legal abortion and to stress that sexual and reproductive health rights are fundamental women’s rights. (debate Wednesday, vote Thursday)

EU summit debate/Malta Declaration. MEPs will convey to Commission Vice-President Maroš Šefčovič and the Portuguese Presidency their expectations for the 24-25 June European Council, which will deal with COVID-19 and recovery, migration, and relations with Turkey and Russia. They will also discuss the EU’s way forward in the area of asylum and migration policy and options for member states to relocate those arriving in front-line countries. (debate Wednesday)

Committees


European Medicines Agency.
The Environment and Public Health Committee will vote on a proposal to strengthen the role of the European Medicines Agency in crisis preparedness and in the management of medicinal products and medical devices, based on the lessons learned during the COVID-19 pandemic. (Tuesday)


ECB/Eurogroup
. Members of the Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee will hold separate debates with European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde and Eurogroup President Paschal Donohoe. The impact of prolonged negative interest rates and the possible effects of US macroeconomic policies on the Euro Area are among the issues likely to be raised. (Monday)


Daphne Caruana Galizia Journalism Prize
. On Tuesday at 14.00, the website for submitting entries to the Daphne Caruana Galizia Prize for Journalism will go live at the Press Club Brussels Europe. It will reward on a yearly basis outstanding journalism that promotes or defends the core principles and values of the European Union. Matthew Caruana Galizia, one of Daphne Caruana’s sons, will participate in the launch event, along with Heidi Hautala (Vice President) and David Casa (Quaestor), Members of the European Parliament.


President’s Diary
. On Thursday morning, EP President Sassoli will meet with the Speaker of the Kuwait National Assembly, Mr Marzouq Al-Gharim), at 16.00 he will address leaders at the EU summit, followed by a press conference at 17.00. On Sunday, President Sassoli will have a private audience with His Holiness Pope Francis.
