Brexit to take centre stage in pre-European Council debate

MEPs will debate defence, social policies, education, migration, and the Brexit negotiations with Commission Vice-President Frans Timmermans and chief EU Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier on Wednesday morning and vote on a resolution.

The Brexit debate will focus on whether the EU Commission and the UK have made “sufficient progress” in the Brexit talks - on citizens’ rights, the UK Northern Irish border with Ireland and the “divorce bill” - to enable them to move on to talks on the shape the future relations between the EU and the UK should take.

The final decision on whether the talks have made “sufficient progress” or not will be taken by the EU 27 heads of state or government, and is scheduled for 15 December.

Parliament as a whole will have the final say on the outcome of negotiations when it votes to approve or reject the withdrawal deal, to be finalised by the end of March 2019.

Procedure:  Council and Commission statements, resolution on Brexit

Debate/vote:  Wednesday, 13 December
