Cutting cash flows to terrorists

MEPs will be recommending robust monitoring of suspicious organisations, charities, transactions, pre-paid cards and virtual currencies, but also proactive intelligence sharing among member states, in an effort to cut off revenue streams to terrorists.

A draft recommendation to the EU Council, Commission and External Action Service to be voted on Thursday suggests that cutting off sources of funding such as illicit trade in goods, firearms, oil, drugs, cigarettes and cultural objects is vital to fight terrorism.

MEPs advocate setting up an EU counter-terrorism financial intelligence platform, including a database of suspicious transactions, which could be checked with EUROPOL to facilitate more proactive information exchange.
