Biodiversity: MEPs set to demand binding targets to protect wildlife and humans

MEPs will debate the new 2030 EU Biodiversity Strategy on Monday and are expected to call for better protection of the EU’s land and sea areas in a vote on Tuesday.

Nature is declining globally at an unprecedented rate, with one million out of an estimated eight million species threatened by extinction (according to the IPBES report). Parliament has consistently prioritised biodiversity, and repeatedly warned of its continuing, unprecedented loss.

Following the adoption of the Commission’s EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030, MEPs are expected to call for a biodiversity law similar to the EU Climate Law to ensure that by 2050 the world’s ecosystems are restored, resilient, and adequately protected.

They are also likely to call for at least 30% of the EU’s land and sea areas to be protected, urgent action to stop the decline of bees and other pollinators as well as binding targets on urban biodiversity such as green roofs.

Procedure: Own-initiative procedure

2020/2273(INI)

Debate: Monday 7 June

Vote: Tuesday 8 June (announcement on Wednesday)
