MEPs to evaluate EU’s response to recent natural disasters

On Tuesday, Parliament will debate with the Commission the measures taken to support countries and regions affected by natural disasters this summer.

Severe floods, landslides and forest fires hit several European countries this summer, causing loss of life and having a devastating impact on people’s homes and livelihoods, as well as economic sectors like farming. MEPs are expected to quiz the Commission on the EU’s immediate support to national and regional authorities, the activation of the EU Civil Protection Mechanism, as well as plans to provide necessary funding for disaster relief through the EU Solidarity Fund.

Parliament is likely to reiterate its concern that extreme weather events and natural disasters will only multiply and intensify as a result of climate change and is expected to call on the Commission to develop long-term disaster management strategies and simplify existing funding procedures.

Procedure: question for oral answer, followed by debate

Debate: Tuesday, 14 September
