Ecodesign: more environmentally-friendly and energy-efficient products

On Wednesday, MEPs will vote on new ecodesign draft rules to make sustainable products the norm in the EU, ahead of negotiations with EU governments.

The Environment Committee adopted its position in June on revising the EU’s ecodesign framework for sustainable products. MEPs request several changes to the Commission proposal, including a specific ban on destroying unsold textiles and electrical and electronic equipment.

They also want the Commission to prioritise setting minimum sustainability requirements for a number of product groups in upcoming ecodesign measures, such as steel, aluminium, textiles, furniture, tyres and chemicals.

The debate will take place on Tuesday evening.

Background

On 30 March 2022, the Commission proposed a new general framework on ecodesign requirements for sustainable products and to repeal current rules which focus on energy-related products only. The revised legislation would apply to almost all products on the internal market (except food, feed, medicinal products and living organisms).
