      1. DEVE delegation to Kenya

Kenya is a key economic and political partner for the European Union and plays an important role as a peace broker in the region and is a leader when it comes to producing regional energy. It also faces a number of challenges with one million children under five malnourished. In this context, a delegation of six members from the Committee on Development, to be chaired by MEP Pierrette Herzberger-Fofana, will travel there from 3 to 5 April 2023.

The purpose of the delegation is to review the EU development portfolio in the country. In particular, the mission will look at Kenya's agricultural sector, food security and resilience to climatic shocks. The importance of investment for sustainable development will also be addressed through exchanges with the European Investment Bank's regional representation which is expected to play a greater role in the context of the operationalisation of the EU Global Gateway Initiative.

The mission will include visits to a selection of EU funded projects and, in the scope of development cooperation, meetings with the Kenyan authorities, local actors, civil society, as well as meetings with the UN and Member State diplomatic missions.

        Members:

        • Pierrette Herzberger-Fofana, First Vice Chair, DEVE committee (Greens, DE)
        • Eleni Stavrou (EPP, CY)
        • Hildegard Bentele (EPP, DE)
        • Juan Fernando López Aguilar (S&D, ES)
        • Carlos Zorrinho (S&D, PT)

The aim of this visit is to learn about the current and planned activities of the Agency as well as the staff and budget situation. It will be an occasion, inter alia, to exchange views on the role of ECHA as knowledge base for areas under the ENVI remit and detail the Agency's support for the current ENVI files in the legislative process.
