Energy infrastructure: Parliament ready to start talks on rules for new projects
- End to financial support for natural gas projects
- Funds should support hydrogen, carbon capture and storage
- Project costs should not increase energy bills for consumers
Parliament greenlit on Wednesday updated selection rules for energy projects in line to receive EU funding, to support making cross-border energy infrastructure sustainable.
MEPs confirmed their position on draft legislation aiming to update the criteria and methodology for selecting energy projects of common interest (PCIs). These include projects like high-voltage transmission lines, pipelines, energy storage facilities or smart grids, which would benefit from fast-track administrative procedures and be eligible to receive EU funds.
As there was no request for a vote on the report of the Industry, Research and Energy committee as voted on the 28 September, that mandate is formally adopted as Parliament’s negotiating position. MEPs will now enter into talks with the Council to determine the final shape of the law. Member state energy ministers agreed their position on 11 June 2021.
