Carbon Farming: Public hearing in Parliament on its use in the EU

In a joint meeting of the Agriculture and Environment Committees on 22 March, MEPs will assess the EU’s current approaches to carbon sequestration through farming.

The purpose of the hearing is to get a better understanding of carbon farming as a tool to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, as well as practical examples of how farmers can benefit from this activity.

Experts and representatives from the European Commission will share their assessment of the challenges carbon farming face in the context of the EU agricultural and climate policy.

The hearing is hosted jointly by the Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development (AGRI) and by the Committee on Environment, Public Health and Food Safety (ENVI).

Background

On 1 March 2023, the ENVI Committee adopted its report on Sustainable Carbon Cycles to which the AGRI Committee has provided an opinion. The report will be debated and voted in the plenary session 17-20 April.
