COP27: prominent Egyptian human rights defenders to address MEPs
On Wednesday afternoon, MEPs and prominent guest speakers will debate the alarming human rights situation in Egypt ahead of the COP27 UN climate summit in Sharm El-Sheikh.
The European Parliament has repeatedly expressed its serious concerns over the human rights situation in Egypt, which has continued to deteriorate over the years. Since Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi came to power in 2014, the country’s authorities have intensified their crackdown on civil society, human rights defenders and journalists, as well as systematically repressing any form of dissent. The purpose of Wednesday’s meeting in the Subcommittee on Human Rights is therefore to take stock of the latest developments in Egypt ahead the new international climate negotiations at the upcoming United Nations Climate Change conference (COP27) from 6 to 18 November.
At the committee debate, MEPs will be joined by Sanaa Seif, activist and sister of prominent imprisoned Egyptian blogger and political activist Alaa Abdelfattah, and Ramy Shaath, an Egyptian-Palestinian activist who spent more than two years in pre-trial detention in Egypt. Richard Pearshouse, environment director at Human Rights Watch, will also participate in the meeting to present his work on Egypt.
