President Sassoli in the European Council: press conference at 15.30

At 15.00, EP President David Sassoli will speak to the EU leaders at the beginning of a two-day summit focussing on the pandemic, economic recovery, migration and relations with Russia and Turkey. The President will give a press conference at 15.30 in the European Council press room. You can follow it live here.

Formal sitting with António Guterres

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres will address MEPs at 11.30. Ahead of the formal sitting, Mr Guterres and President Sassoli will have a bilateral meeting. They will also give a press conference following Mr Guterres’ intervention in plenary, in Anna Politkovskaya room, around 11.50. You can follow it live.

European Climate Law

Starting at 8.30, MEPs will exchange views with EC Executive Vice-President Timmermans and the Portuguese Presidency on the new EU Climate Law, which substantially increases the EU’s 2030 emissions reductions target and makes the political commitment to be climate neutral by 2050 binding. Plenary will then vote on the agreement reached with Council, with results announced at 13.00.

In brief

Appointments to the European Public Prosecutor’s Office. Plenary will debate the consequences of the delay in appointing national delegated prosecutors to the new European Public Prosecutor Office (EPPO) with Commissioner Reynders and the Portuguese Presidency.

Public sector loan facility under the Just Transition Mechanism. MEPs will assess with Commissioner Ferreira the EU programme to support the public sector to deal with climate change in the regions most negatively affected by the climate transition.

Votes

There will be two voting sessions, from 9.30 to 10.45, with results announced at 13.00, and from 14.30 to 15.45, with results announced at 18.15.

In the first voting session, MEPs will vote, among other things, on:

  • the European Climate Law,
  • amendments to the reports on sexual and reproductive health and rights in the EU, and on Bosnia and Herzegovina.

In the second voting session, they will hold their final vote on:

  • sexual and reproductive health and rights in the EU,
  • the role of the EU’s development cooperation and humanitarian assistance in addressing the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic,
  • the 2020 Rule of law report,
  • the annual reports on Bosnia and Herzegovina, and
  • the public sector loan facility under the Just Transition Mechanism
