MEPs: The 2030 Agenda is vital for our response to humanitarian and climate crises
Committee on Development and Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety MEPs attended the UN High Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development on 13-15 July.
On the final day of the UN High Level Political Forum (HLPF) on Sustainable Development, the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety MEP - and co-chair of the seven-member delegation - Tiemo Wölken (S&D, DE), said: “Achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development will be essential in reaching our climate goals. More than that, the Agenda 2030 and its 17 SDGs are the roadmap to solving the current and future environmental, health and conflict crises, paving a way to a more prosperous future.”
Tomas Tobé (EPP, SV), Chair of the Committee on Development and co-chair of the delegation, said: “Parliamentarians have an important role to play in defending multilateralism, which in the current situation is more needed than ever. Acting collectively, we can use the UN SDGs as a guide to tackling the current humanitarian crises and putting mankind on the right path towards sustainable development.”
During their attendance of the HLPF, MEPs participating in the delegation held a series of bilateral meetings with different groups, including civil society. They discussed the impact of COVID-19 and the war in Ukraine on the Sustainable Development Goals, the need to accelerate the implementation of Agenda 2030, and the necessity of additional funding to reflect international commitments.
