MFF team travels to Croatia to discuss next long-term EU budget

Visiting Zagreb on 27 January, the Budgets Committee continues in-depth discussions with the Croatian Council Presidency on the next long-term EU budget.

The objective of the high-level meetings with Prime Minister Andrej Plenković, various Ministers and Members of Parliament is to discuss the state-of-play on the negotiations on the next multiannual financial framework (MFF 2021-2027) and the reform of the EU’s Own Resources (revenue), as well as the work planning of the Croatian Presidency of the Council of the EU.

The members of the EP’s negotiating team will exchange views on Parliament's and Member States' positions on the MFF and Own Resources files, and enquire about the Croatian presidency's contribution to the work of the President of the European Council Charles Michel and next steps planned, after EU leaders have called on Mr Michel to try and break the MFF stalemate and take the negotiations forward.


They also intend to discuss ways forward on the Green Deal, and more specifically the Sustainable Europe Investment Plan and Just Transition Mechanism.

A joint press statement of the EP delegation and the Minister of Finances of Croatia, Zdravko Marić, will take place on Monday, 27 January at 10:00, at the Croatian Government (Banski dvori), 2 St Mark’s Square, Zagreb.


Background


As the current long-term EU budget is running out on 31 December 2020, the EU needs a new budgetary planning horizon for the next seven years. The EU Commission has thus presented plans for the next multiannual financial framework for 2021-2027 in May 2018. The European Parliament has adopted its position in November 2018, and re-confirmed it in October 2019. The Council has not been able to agree on a position yet.
