Press statement on the legislative elections in Venezuela on 6 December 2020.

“The regime of Nicolás Maduro has called elections to the National Assembly of Venezuela on 6 December 2020.

The European Parliament will not observe this process, and consequently will neither comment on the process, nor on the results that will be announced afterwards. No individual Member of the European Parliament has been mandated to observe or comment on this electoral process on its behalf.

Therefore, should any Member of the European Parliament decide to observe these elections, they would do so on their own initiative and should under no circumstances, through any statement or action, associate their participation with the European Parliament.

In its resolution on the humanitarian situation in Venezuela and the migration and refugee crisis of July 2020, the European Parliament called for the creation of conditions “leading to free, transparent and credible” elections, including “fair conditions for all actors”, and these have not been met."

The statement is co-signed by:

David McAllister (Chairperson of the Committee on Foreign Affairs, co-chairperson of Parliament’s Democracy Support and Election Coordination Group);

Tomas Tobé (Chairperson of the Committee on Development, co-chairperson of Parliament’s Democracy Support and Election Coordination Group).
