A delegation of EP‘s committee of Inquiry on the protection of animals during transport (ANIT), led by Ms. Tilly Metz (Greens, LU), will visit Denmark on 3-5 November 2021.

Four MEPs delegation will visit transport companies and animal farms in Denmark, to discuss with farmers and transport operators best practices in ensuring animal welfare during transport. They will also meet Danish Chief Veterinary Officer as well as local animal protection NGOs.

MEPs are to assess first-hand the main difficulties EU countries are facing in enforcing current animal welfare rules. The results of this mission will feed into committee’s work on suggesting ways how to update current EU rules, so that animal welfare protection in EU is up to date and working.

Ahead of the mission Ms Tilly Metz, Chair of ANIT, stressed: “I’m excited for our mission to Denmark, the last official mission of the ANIT committee. The goal of this mission is to exchange views with a broad variety of officials and stakeholders and to see some best cases in the field of animal transport. After having witnessed a lot of negative examples of animal transport, I am looking forward to seeing and discussing about best practices with local stakeholders. Overall, I hope that the mission will be fruitful for the members of our committee, especially in the elaboration of recommendations for a better protection of animals during transport.“

Ms Metz will be joined by three other MEPs: Mr. Niels Fuglsang (S&D, DA), Mr. Asger Christensen (Renew, DA) and Mr. Francisco Guerreiro (Greens, PT).

At the end of the mission, MEPs will hold a press conference at the European Parliament Liaison Office in Denmark (5 November at 11:45 am). Media questions as well as registration for the press conference should be directed to Parliament’s press officer in Denmark, Jacob Lolck (email: jacob.lolck@ep.europa.eu; phone: +45 25 48 87 11).

Background

The Committee of Inquiry on the Protection of Animals during Transport was set up in June 2020 to investigate alleged violations in the application of European Union law on the protection of animals during transport and related operations within and outside the EU, including by air, road, rail and sea. It focuses on the implementation of EU rules by member states and its correct enforcement by the EU Commission.

The draft report on the investigation of alleged contraventions and maladministration in the application of Union law and relevant recommendations are being already discussed in committee with a view to adopting them in December 2021.
