The COVID19 crisis and broken supply chains have highlighted the essential role of local traders in neighbourhoods, cities and municipalities. Retail SMEs are crucial for urban and rural local communities as they supply food, services and goods but also offer proximity and are part of the social fabric.

For European strategic autonomy and for the day-to-day life of European citizens, local trade is essential. The creation of a European Capital of Small Retail would support its green and digital transformation while strengthening the European economic ecosystem.
Petition No 0699/2021 proposing the creation of a European Capital of Local Trade and Retail was decisive for the successful vote the European Parliament's vote for a Resolution in that sense.
