Petition Summary

The petitioner complains that, two years after the accident, that took the lives of 57 people, the remote control and signalling system is allegedly still not fully operational on the Greek rail network, despite millions of euro in EU funding. He expresses concern that no one is able to fully guarantee the safe transport of passengers and stresses that there have been a lot of instances where accidents were averted at the last moment. He adds that the lack of reliable information from the Greek authorities on the cargo of the commercial train the night of the accident, the decision to cover the crash site with rubble and the delays in the judicial investigation on the circumstances of the accident have incensed the relatives of victims and the general public in Greece and in Europe as a whole. He asks the Parliament to find out why the judicial investigation is not moving forward and why the European Commission did not insist on the swift completion of the co-financed project prior to or following the accident, instead putting up with the long delays.
