The petitioner calls for close cooperation between Germany and the European Union on asylum and refugee issues in order to significantly speed up procedures in Germany and thus reduce the financial burden on the municipalities. He points out that the number of refugees in Germany is constantly increasing and that German local authorities are facing major organisational and financial challenges. The current situation has led to budget restrictions seriously impacting on the quality of life in many districts, cities and municipalities, and reducing public services. He also calls for swifter asylum procedures in Germany, adding that Germany alone cannot be expected to solve all refugee problems. Accordingly, he calls for a common European asylum and refugee initiative that shares the burden evenly across all EU Member States.
