Summary title: Petition No 1471/2020 by G.V. (Hungarian) on Google's cessation of Google Play Music application on android devices
Petition number: 1471/2020
Topics: Competition, Consumer Rights
Country: European Union
Name: G. V.
The petitioner claims that Google revoked functionality of the music player application “Google Play Music” in December 2020 from all Android users. He claims that opening the application displays a recommendation to transfer data over to the app “Youtube Music”, which operates with changed functionality. He explains that viable alternatives with similar functionality to the old “Google Play Music” exist, however, they are neither recommended nor mentioned by Google. In his view, this case clearly showcases Google engaging in contra-market behaviour by attempting to steer consumers towards one of its products (Youtube Music) through full control over another product (Android operating system; its former default music player). He calls for Google to maintain a market-neutral alternative music player, to recommend a variety of music players instead of a single one they own, or to not recommend any single app at all and instead suggest customers find one themselves.
