Parliamentary questions
6 June 2007
Answer given by Mr Frattini on behalf of the Commission

In accordance with the 2007 Annual Work Programme of the Agency, a joint operation (Nautilus 2007) is being planned and will be carried out under the coordination of Frontex in that geographical area as from the summer of 2007. The Agency has called on Member States to express their interest for participation in the Nautilus 2007 operation. As this operation is still in its planning phase, unfortunately, further information covering its exact starting date and duration is not available. The first phase of the Nautilus operation will start toward the end of June 2007. It is a permanent operation, which will be included in the European Patrols Network in 2008.

Furthermore, the European Council, by its conclusions of December 2006, invited Frontex to establish as soon as possible, together with the Member States of the region, a permanent Coastal Patrols Network at the southern maritime borders.

The first phase of the European Patrols Network started on 24 May 2007 and will consist of bilateral cooperation — including jointly scheduled and implemented patrolling activities — between each pair of neighbouring Member States in the Mediterranean with the support and coordination of Frontex. Thus, the European Patrols Network will also cover the central Mediterranean area, resulting in a regular and enhanced exchange of information and patrol activities of that area, in the most resource-effective manner.
