Sexual and reproductive health and rights (A7-0306/2013 - Edite Estrela)

Lívia Járóka (PPE), in writing. − One of the most grievous ways in which the sexual and reproductive health and rights of women is violated is forced sterilisation. In several Member States of the European Union however, court judgments have proven that Roma women have been subjected to this impermissible violation of human rights, with the aim of reducing the birth rate in Roma communities which was deemed ‘high and unhealthyʼ. Despite the number of cases that were made public, officially registered and which ended with final court judgments in favour of the victims, suitable compensation and official apologies are in most cases still pending. The Member States concerned must execute the judgments therefore and abide by their instructions with immediate effect by establishing a proper mechanism – if necessary – that ensures women whose reproductive capacities were destroyed without their consent receive suitable compensation. It is also essential that Member States investigate without delay the extreme human rights abuses against Roma women, penalise the perpetrators and ensure that all victims are identified and provided with redress.
