Storage of waste

WRITTEN QUESTION E-2229/04
by Giovanni Pittella (PSE) , Michele Santoro (PSE) and Alfonso Andria (ALDE/ADLE)
to the Commission

Italy's Campania region is in a serious situation on account of the difficulties it is currently experiencing with the storage of waste.

The process of identifying sites and determining arrangements for the collection and disposal of waste involves scientific assessment and verification procedures designed to prevent damage to the environment.

Campania's special commissioner for waste - Mr Catenacci - has proposed Serralonga-Basso dell'Olmo (in the Campagna/Salerno district) as a site at which waste could be stored.

The area in question is subject to numerous environmental and hydro-geological restraints.

The selected site is close to the WWF Campagna-Serre-Persano nature reserve and it constitutes a Site of Community Interest (SCI).

In view of the above, would the Commission say whether or not such a proposal infringes Council Directive 1999/31[1] of 26 April 1999 on the landfill of waste, which contains a list of the criteria which must be met when landfill sites are being selected?
