Security at the EU's external borders

WRITTEN QUESTION P-3183/10
by Justas Vincas Paleckis (S&D)
to the Commission

When the new Member States joined the Schengen area, the EU allocated considerable funds to ensuring security at the EU’s external borders, as those states would not be able to combat criminals and smugglers. Recently, however, in certain new Member States smuggling has grown considerably and the number of offences at the external borders is rising.

How does the Commission assess security at the EU’s external borders in the new Member States? Does not the Commission consider that Frontex needs to be given the possibility of devoting more technical, financial and human resources to joint border-security operations in those Member States where the security of the EU’s borders is most often breached and where smuggling continues to occur?
