on EU aid to Iran following the earthquake

European Parliament resolution on EU aid to Iran following the earthquake 

The European Parliament,

–  having regard to the horrific earthquake disaster in Bam in Iran on 26 December 2003,

–  having regard to Rule 37(2) of its Rules of Procedure,

A.  whereas 40 000 people were tragically killed as a result of this human disaster,

B.  whereas tens of thousands of citizens from Bam city have been displaced from their homes and the quality of their lives has been ruined,

C.  whereas there are now up to 8 000 orphans now living in Bam city,

D.  whereas the architecturally significant areas of Bam city have also been destroyed,

1.  Endorses the request from the Iranian President, Mr Khatami, for international assistance;

2.  Welcomes the fact that the international community has responded so positively in terms of providing financial aid and humanitarian assistance;

3.  Recognises the fact that the Iranian Government is now drawing up plans for the long‑term reconstruction of Bam city and its surrounding areas;

4.  Calls on the European Council to provide long-term financial assistance to the Iranian Government to help with the reconstruction of Bam city over the next few years, taking into account the urgent needs of the survivors, who need to reconstruct their own lives;

5.  Calls on the Commission to draw up programmes to provide technical assistance for the provision of educational, social services and infrastructures in Bam city;

6.  Instructs its President to forward this resolution to the Council, the Commission and the Government and Parliament of Iran.
