WRITTEN QUESTION by Simon Busuttil (PPE‑DE) to the Commission

Subject: Dioxin levels in the Campania region
 Answer(s)

According to press reports, high dioxin levels in the Acerra and Nola areas have been causing malformations and deaths in animals and also led to the death of one person. A study carried out by the CNR (Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche) also confirms reports about high levels of dioxin being monitored in humans, animals, plants and soil in a number of areas in the Campania region.

In the light of these reports and the current waste crisis in Naples, could the Commission verify whether proper measures are being taken to test food products which partly or wholly originate from these areas for dioxin contamination?

Is the Commission satisfied that Italy conforms to safety regulations applicable in this regard?

Is the Commission considering measures in the interests of EU public health safety with regards to products from these affected areas that are delivered to other countries of the European Union?
