STOA delegation to Science City

In line with their mission to support scientific and technological innovation, the legislators on the European Parliament's Panel for the Future of Science and Technology recently took part in a visit to Science City in Hamburg, Germany. Aiming to become one of Europe’s leading research centres by 2040, Science City is more than the sum of its parts: located in an area of 125 hectares in Hamburg’s district Bahrenfeld, Science City joins science, business and housing.
An incubator for innovations and technology transfer, Science City hosts a research campus equipped with a wide range of laboratories and unique research infrastructures for basic research and applied science, accommodating more than 15,000 students, scientists and creative people, with 2500 apartments and recreational areas. It also hosts the Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron (DESY), one of the world's leading particle accelerator centres. Science City is a forward-looking project led in collaboration by the University of Hamburg, DESY and the Max Planck Society, and open to international collaborations.
The STOA Panel visit took place on Friday 17 February 2023. MEPs Christian Ehler and Ivo Hristov visited organic chemistry, systems biology, and physics laboratories, and participated in discussions with key scientists, including ERC grantees, young entrepreneurs and start-up founders, as well as representatives from the University of Hamburg and the German Ministry of Science.
