Statement by President Sassoli following Parliament resolution on post-2020 EU budget revision and economic recovery plan
Speaking at a press conference following Parliament’s adoption of an ambitious resolution calling for €2 trillion to support Europe’s recovery from the COVID-19 crisis, European Parliament President David Sassoli said:
“This is a very important and very political resolution. An overwhelming number of MEPs and political groups supported it, from across the political spectrum, with 505 in favour, 119 against, and 69 abstentions.
“This sends a powerful message to other EU institutions and national governments - act fast and be ambitious. The resolution calls for a rapid recovery plan and resources to be made available immediately. We need to show real ambition in the coming period of reconstruction, to meet the demands of our citizens and businesses.
“Parliament must be a leading figure in this next phase. We call on the Commission to activate immediately Article 324 of the EU treaties, so a real negotiation between institutions can begin on the MFF and reconstruction fund. We will not sit and wait or just rubber-stamp any deal.
“Any EU budget must include an increase in genuine own resources, so the EU budget is adequately and sustainably funded. We must be ambitious and act quickly, in the coming weeks we will decide what the EU looks like for years to come.”
“I am pleased that European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen confirmed she will come to the European Parliament to present the reconstruction plan on 27 May, during an extraordinary plenary session"
