Statement by European Parliament President at the opening of plenary session
“Several colleagues and citizens have brought to my attention the case of Slovak citizen Jozef Chovanec, who died after being held in custody at Charleroi airport in February 2018.
“I would like to express my solidarity with his family and loved ones and to stress once again that the respect for human rights and the rule of law is a key value of the European Union.
“We support the demand for a full investigation to ensure clarity on the case, and call for explanations from those responsible.
“The Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs, has already been assigned to deal with this case and the rest of the European Parliament will follow the developments closely.”
