Sassoli: Frugal four must be aware of the seriousness of challenges we face

Statement by President Sassoli on proposals from Austrian, Danish, Dutch and Swedish governments

Speaking today to a network of female correspondents in Brussels, the President of the European Parliament David Sassoli responded to a question on the proposals from the Austrian, Danish, Dutch and Swedish governments on the recovery fund. He said:

“I appeal to their sense of responsibility. There are not frugal countries and free-spending countries. Rather, there are countries aware of the seriousness of the challenges we face and those that are not. That is why I ask everyone to live up to this historic moment. Everyone benefits from the EU single market, and the countries which have raised objections are some of those that have benefited the most. I hope that everyone appreciates this. Now is not the time for rigid thinking but for reconstruction, otherwise we will end up with a Europe moving at different speeds.”
