Real challenges to the ECB

Задълбочен анализ 25-05-2023

On 31 March 2022, the Commission proposed a regulation that would lay down, in a single legal text, rules for geographical indications (GIs) for wine, spirit drinks and agricultural products, which are currently spread over three different regulations. During the May II plenary session, Parliament is expected to hold a debate on the report from the Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development (AGRI) and vote on the mandate for negotiations with the Council.

EU support for the implementation of Slovenia's National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP) amounts to €2 482.3 million, and includes €1 776.9 million in grants and €705.4 million in loans. This amount should be committed by the end of 2023, and paid out to Slovenia by the end of 2026. While the overall allocation represents only 0.3 % of the total Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF), it stood at 5.1 % of the country's gross domestic product (GDP) in 2019 (the RRF being 5.2 % of EU-27 GDP in ...

Corporate sustainability due diligence

Накратко 25-05-2023

In February 2022, the European Commission proposed a draft directive on corporate sustainability due diligence, to introduce mandatory due diligence on human rights and environmental criteria, and directors' duty of care. Parliament has long advocated binding EU legislation on this issue, not least in a 2021 resolution. In March 2023, the Committee on Legal Affairs adopted its report on the proposal, calling for a number of changes. The report will be debated during the May II 2023 plenary session ...

Monetary policy and financial stability

Задълбочен анализ 25-05-2023

Monetary policy tightening has led to a sharp steepening of the yield curve and this has had a negative impact on banks that were not well-positioned to cope with this shock. This paper reviews current banking tensions and argues that they are unlikely to have a major impact on the ECB’s monetary policy decisions in the current cycle.

New economic governance rules

Briefing 24-05-2023

On 26 April 2023, the European Commission published a package of three proposals to revise the EU's economic governance framework: a regulation to replace the current preventive arm of the stability and growth pact (SGP), an amending Council regulation on the corrective arm of the SGP, and an amending Council directive to strengthen the role of independent fiscal institutions. The main proposal on the preventive arm is to be adopted through the ordinary legislative procedure with the Parliament and ...
