The overview of the fisheries in Madeira was prepared to provide information for the mission of the Committee of Fisheries to Madeira in 2017 (22-25 May).

The revised Common Market Organisation (CMO) is a great opportunity for small-scale fisheries (SSF) producers to better access the market and to compete successfully with imported fishery products. The aim of intervention is to give the consumer the opportunity to buy a fresh, safe, and environmentally-friendly product, and to guarantee an acceptable income to local SSF fishers.

Clams are an important fishery resource in the European Union. The Adriatic Sea clam fishery shows a declining trend and is losing market share. There is increasing interest to reduce the minimum landing size in order to allow further landings to reduce the socioeconomic impact. This particular situation is examined in this paper and an expert opinion is produced on the way forward.

This study describes fisheries, stock status, ICES advice and management measures for the Northern and Southern sardine stocks in EU Atlantic waters. Information on sardine biology and ecology is provided for a better understanding of stock development. Commercial inland fisheries are small-scale, labour intensive, traditional fisheries mostly using passive gear. They produce high value products of local importance. The Use of Fads in Tuna Fisheries

An analysis of the use of FADs in the tuna fisheries and a summary of available information on the likely influence of FADs on the ability of a fishing vessel to catch fish, is presented. Making use of the information held in tuna RFMO data bases, the extent to which FAD use in tropical tuna fisheries continues to expand and the effect of FAD use on targeted tunas and other accompanying species is provided.
