Culture

EU Fact Sheets 16-02-2026

With Member States responsible for their own policies for the cultural sector, the EU’s action is aimed at supplementing and supporting them, with a focus on the preservation of European cultural heritage, cooperation between various countries’ cultural institutions and the promotion of mobility among creative workers. The cultural sector is also affected by provisions of the Treaties that do not explicitly pertain to culture.

In the proposal for the 2028-2034 multiannual financial framework (MFF), AgoraEU is combining two previous programmes, succeeding the Creative Europe programme with its Culture and Media strands, established by Regulation (EU) 2021/818, and the Citizens, Equality, Rights and Values (CERV) programme, established by Regulation (EU) 2021/692. The European Union (EU) considers language learning an important priority as part of its efforts to promote mobility and intercultural understanding. It views multilingualism as an important element of Europe’s competitiveness and funds numerous programmes and projects in this area. One of the objectives of the EU’s language policy is therefore for every citizen to master two languages besides their mother tongue.

Sport

EU Fact Sheets 26-01-2026

The EU gained responsibilities for sport under the Treaty of Lisbon, which came into effect in December 2009. Since then, it has been responsible for developing evidence-based policy, fostering cooperation and managing initiatives to support physical activity and sport across Europe. Dedicated specific funding for sport was introduced for the first time under the first Erasmus+ programme (2014-2020) and has been continued under subsequent iterations of the programme.
