Russia and the Western Balkans: Geopolitical confrontation, economic influence and political interference
The Western Balkan countries have emerged as a frontline in Russia's geopolitical confrontation with the West. While the Russian Federation has strong historical ties with the Western Balkans, and holds a certain soft-power attraction for the region, its influence and economic impact there are declining. Meanwhile, the EU and NATO presence in the region is advancing, and investment and aid from the EU-27 and other players, such as China, have been dwarfing Russian investment. Russia's 2022 invasion ...
Renewed partnership with the Southern Neighbourhood
On 9 February 2021, the European Commission and the High Representative adopted a joint communication to the European Parliament and the Council on a Renewed Partnership with the Southern Neighbourhood. On 19 April 2021, the Council endorsed the renewed partnership, which aims to 'address common challenges' and 'unlock the region's economic potential for the benefit of its people'. Parliament is expected to vote on a report on the joint communication during its September 2022 plenary session.
The European Union and regional economic integration: Creating collective public goods – Past, present and future
EPRS invites leading experts and commentators to share their thinking and insights on important features of the European Union as a political and economic system. In this paper, Iain Begg, Professorial Research Fellow at the London School of Economics (LSE), reflects on the distinctive characteristics of the EU as the world's leading exemplar of regional economic integration, and its unique experience since the 1950s in generating collective public goods for its Member States as a foundation for ...
A renewed territorial agenda for the EU
The main objective of the territorial agenda is to strengthen territorial cohesion, an EU principle that seeks to ensure the balanced development of the EU and reduce its regional disparities. The United States' role in Central Asia
Geographically distant and without historical ties to the region, the USA has never been a major player in Central Asia. However, both sides stand to gain from closer ties: for the USA, Central Asian countries are key partners in meeting security challenges; for Central Asia, benefits could include increased investment and reduced dependence on Russia and China, the two main regional powers.
Euroopa territoriaalse koostöö toetamine Euroopa Regionaalarengu Fondi vahenditega
Euroopa territoriaalne koostöö on ühtekuuluvuspoliitika vahend, millega püütakse lahendada piiriüleseid probleeme ja arendada ühiselt eri territooriumide potentsiaali. Euroopa Regionaalarengu Fondist toetatakse kolme laadi koostööd ehk piiriülest koostööd, riikidevahelist koostööd ja piirkondadevahelist koostööd.
Äärepoolseimad piirkonnad
Euroopa Liidu kõige kaugemate ehk äärepoolseimate piirkondade arengu toetamiseks on kehtestatud erimeetmed. Äärepoolseimad piirkonnad on järgmised: Guadeloupe, Prantsuse Guajaana, Réunion, Martinique, Mayotte ja Saint-Martin (Prantsusmaa), Assoorid ja Madeira (Portugal) ning Kanaari saared (Hispaania). Toetuse eesmärk on leevendada nende piirkondade erilisest geograafilisest eraldatusest tulenevaid ebasoodsaid olusid.
Euroopa Regionaalarengu Fond (ERF)
Euroopa Regionaalarengu Fond (ERF) on üks ELi ühtekuuluvuspoliitika peamiseid rahastamisvahendeid.
