The Western Balkan countries have emerged as a frontline in Russia's geopolitical confrontation with the West. While the Russian Federation has strong historical ties with the Western Balkans, and holds a certain soft-power attraction for the region, its influence and economic impact there are declining. Meanwhile, the EU and NATO presence in the region is advancing, and investment and aid from the EU-27 and other players, such as China, have been dwarfing Russian investment. Russia's 2022 invasion ...

On 9 February 2021, the European Commission and the High Representative adopted a joint communication to the European Parliament and the Council on a Renewed Partnership with the Southern Neighbourhood. On 19 April 2021, the Council endorsed the renewed partnership, which aims to 'address common challenges' and 'unlock the region's economic potential for the benefit of its people'. Parliament is expected to vote on a report on the joint communication during its September 2022 plenary session.

EPRS invites leading experts and commentators to share their thinking and insights on important features of the European Union as a political and economic system. In this paper, Iain Begg, Professorial Research Fellow at the London School of Economics (LSE), reflects on the distinctive characteristics of the EU as the world's leading exemplar of regional economic integration, and its unique experience since the 1950s in generating collective public goods for its Member States as a foundation for ...

Geographically distant and without historical ties to the region, the USA has never been a major player in Central Asia. However, both sides stand to gain from closer ties: for the USA, Central Asian countries are key partners in meeting security challenges; for Central Asia, benefits could include increased investment and reduced dependence on Russia and China, the two main regional powers.

Euroopan alueellinen yhteistyö on koheesiopolitiikan väline, jolla pyritään ratkaisemaan ongelmia yli rajojen ja kehittämään yhdessä eri alueiden potentiaalia. Euroopan aluekehitysrahastosta tuetaan kolmenlaista alueellista yhteistyötä eli rajat ylittävää yhteistyötä, valtioiden välistä yhteistyötä ja alueiden välistä yhteistyötä.

Syrjäisimmät alueet

Faktatietoja EU:sta 01-11-2017

Euroopan unionin syrjäisimpien alueiden kehitystä tuetaan erityistoimilla. Nämä alueet ovat: Guadeloupe, Ranskan Guayana, Réunion, Martinique, Mayotte ja Saint-Martin (Ranska), Azorit ja Madeira (Portugali) sekä Kanariansaaret (Espanja). Tuella pyritään lieventämään näiden alueiden maantieteellisestä erityisasemasta aiheutuvia rajoitteita.

Euroopan aluekehitysrahasto (EAKR)

Faktatietoja EU:sta 01-11-2017

Euroopan aluekehitysrahasto (EAKR) on tärkeimpiä unionin koheesiopolitiikan välineitä.
