The present note was requested by the Committee on Fisheries of the European Parliament for its Delegation to the northern part of Jutland, Denmark (28-30 October 2013). This paper aims to provide an overview of the main operational problems and difficulties associated with the production of scientific advice for fisheries management in Europe. The current fisheries management system in Europe is described in outline and a number of key stages are identified. Some of the main problems and difficulties associated with the provision of scientific advice is discussed in relation to each of the stages of the assessment and advisory process.
