The EU has adopted a regulation introducing new rules on fisheries control. The act amends five regulations, of which Council Regulation (EC) 1224/2009 (the Control Regulation) forms the core of the EU fisheries control system. The revision is the result of a long process. In May 2018, the European Commission tabled the proposal as the last major component of the 2013 revision of the common fisheries policy. The European Parliament and the Council adopted their positions in March and June 2021 respectively ...

During the October II plenary session, the Parliament is expected to vote on an agreement with the Council to revise the EU fisheries control system. The new legislation represents a complete overhaul of the current system. Major changes concern the tracking of all fishing vessels, electronic reporting of all catches, monitoring of recreational fisheries, improved traceability of fisheries products, and harmonisation of sanctions. CCTV cameras will be used to monitor vessels at high risk of not complying ...

Illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing is widely recognised as a significant environmental, economic and social problem. It represents a major threat to marine ecosystems, a disruption for the seafood market, and an unfair disadvantage for responsible fishermen. Combatting IUU fishing has become a key means for achieving sustainable management of global fisheries. While the root cause of IUU fishing is states' failure to discipline vessels operating under their flag, tackling this phenomenon ...

The IUU Regulation (1005/2008) is the core of the EU’s legal framework for action against global IUU fishing. Its primary objective is to prevent, deter and eliminate the trade of IUU-caught products into the EU. One of its key components is a multiple-step procedure for dealing with non-EU countries considered uncooperative in the fight against IUU fishing. Sixth edition. This infographic further updates an earlier one, the previous edition of which was in March 2021. For more information on IUU ...

This At-a-glance note is the first in a series of three, prepared for a PECH Committee Workshop. It reviews the state of the art of transmitted positional data systems, high resolution and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) for satellite image data used in fisheries control and fisheries research. It identifies the strengths and weaknesses of such systems and provides policy recommendations for a more effective fisheries control system based on currently applied electronic technologies (ET).

The Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC) is an intergovernmental fisheries management organisation responsible for tuna and tuna-like fish stocks in the Indian Ocean. As a contracting party, the European Union must transpose its decisions into EU law, insofar as they are not already covered by it. In March 2021, the European Commission presented a proposal for a new regulation dedicated to the transposition of IOTC rules.

New EU rules on fisheries control

Kratki prikaz 03-03-2021

Fisheries control aims to ensure compliance with the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP), and is therefore a key condition for its success. The EU control system is currently under revision, with a European Commission proposal intended to modernise the monitoring of fisheries activities, improve enforcement and update the rules in line with the latest CFP reform. Parliament's vote on the revision is scheduled for the March I part-session.

Multiannual fisheries management plans are essential tools for the sustainable exploitation of marine resources, offering better predictability over time and a framework for improved cooperation between Member States at sea basin level. As part of a series of such plans adopted since the last reform of the common fisheries policy, the European Commission put forward, in February 2017, a proposal for a multiannual plan intended to manage fisheries of small pelagic fish stocks (anchovy and sardine) ...
