This study provides the European Parliament’s Committee on Transport and Tourism (TRAN) with an overview of the repercussions of the COVID-19 pandemic on the EU transport and tourism sectors and policy recommendations to address the challenges emerging from the crisis.

The study investigates key challenges and trends concerning transport infrastructure in low-density and depopulating areas . It also provides a comprehensive assessment of relevant transport policies and projects already implemented as well as policy recommendations aimed at overcoming those identified challenges and gaps.

Recent trends and developments indicate a growing user-centric approach to mobility, prioritising individual needs and users’ interests. Disruptive emerging technologies and shared mobility solutions bring new stakeholders to the urban ecosystem. COVID-19 has changed behaviours, with walking, cycling and private car use increasing. E-commerce demand has increased significantly, and contactless solutions are still preferred.

The study provides an overview of the benefits of cultural heritage conservation and describes good practices for sustainable management and safeguarding of tangible cultural heritage in the European Union. It also presents a brief overview of actions and programmes on the European level in the field of cultural heritage.

This briefing note presents a comparison between the current Competitiveness and Innovation Framework Programme (CIP) and the proposed programme for the Competitiveness of Enterprises and SMEs (COSME) for 2014-2020. Particular emphasis is placed on the transfer of measures as well as the synergies with other funding opportunities, in particular in the field of research and innovation with the upcoming Horizon 2020 programme.

The debate at the workshop focused on the functioning of the market surveillance system and the adequacy of the General Product Safety Directive (GPSD). The need for aligning the GPSD and the New Legislative Framework (NLF) was discussed in detail and challenges such as market surveillance of goods sold online or cooperation between markets surveillance and customs authorities were also covered.

The workshop aimed at assessing the current state of implementation of the Services Directive and to look at existing obstacles. The topics that were discussed are as follows: screening of legislation; Point of Single Contacts; mutual assistance and administrative cooperation; the scope and interaction of the Directive with existing Community Law.
