Dal dicembre 2009 l'Unione ha competenza per svolgere azioni intese a sostenere, coordinare o completare l'azione degli Stati membri nella politica del turismo. Sebbene il quadro finanziario pluriennale 2021-2027 non preveda una linea di bilancio distinta per la politica del turismo, nel periodo 2022-2023 il bilancio per le attività turistiche è stato stanziato nell'ambito del programma per il mercato unico.
