ES teisėsaugos bendradarbiavimo agentūra (Europolas) yra pagrindinė ES didesnės vidaus saugumo infrastruktūros dalis. Bendradarbiavimas ir politika teisėsaugos srityje vis dar plėtojami, ypatingą dėmesį skiriant kovai su terorizmu, kibernetiniais nusikaltimais ir kitų formų sunkiu ir organizuotu nusikalstamumu. Pagrindinis tikslas – užtikrinti saugesnę Europą visiems ES gyventojams, laikantis pagrindinių teisių ir duomenų apsaugos taisyklių, kaip ne kartą prašė Parlamentas.

Europos piliečių iniciatyva yra svarbi ES dalyvaujamosios demokratijos priemonė, kurią taikant vienas milijonas ES piliečių, gyvenančių ketvirtadalyje valstybių narių, gali prašyti Komisijos pateikti pasiūlymą dėl teisės akto ES sutartims įgyvendinti. Nuo 2011 m., kai buvo pradėtas taikyti Reglamentas, kuriuo nustatoma išsami Europos piliečių iniciatyvos tvarka, Komisijai sėkmingai pateiktos dešimt iniciatyvų. Teisminis bendradarbiavimas baudžiamosiose bylose grindžiamas teismo nuosprendžių ir sprendimų tarpusavio pripažinimo principu ir apima priemones, kuriomis siekiama suderinti valstybių narių teisės aktus tam tikrose srityse. Lisabonos sutartyje nustatytas tvirtesnis pagrindas baudžiamojo teisingumo erdvei kurti, taip pat numatyti nauji Europos Parlamento įgaliojimai.
