The Commission is proposing a revision of the Fisheries Control System to enhance its effectiveness and efficiency by adapting it to the prevailing legal situation and to current technological possibilities in the field of fisheries control. Clams are an important fishery resource in the European Union. The Adriatic Sea clam fishery shows a declining trend and is losing market share. There is increasing interest to reduce the minimum landing size in order to allow further landings to reduce the socioeconomic impact. This particular situation is examined in this paper and an expert opinion is produced on the way forward.

This study describes fisheries, stock status, ICES advice and management measures for the Northern and Southern sardine stocks in EU Atlantic waters. Information on sardine biology and ecology is provided for a better understanding of stock development. Social and economic dimensions are addressed for sardine fisheries in France, Spain and Portugal. The study provides recommendations to improve knowledge on the species and indicates management measures which might be considered for the sustainability ...

This study reviews the impacts of the new Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) rules requiring catches in regulated fisheries to be landed and counted against quotas of each Member State ("the landing obligation and requiring that catch of species subject to the landing obligation below a minimum conservation reference size be restricted to purposes other than direct human consumption. The study estimates the level of discarded fish likely to be covered by the new rules, the impact of the rules on EU fisheries ...

The landing obligation, designed to end the practice of 'discarding' fish, is a central component of the reformed Common Fisheries Policy adopted in December 2013. In order to review the specific measures in current legislation which conflict with the landing obligation, the Commission has put forward an 'omnibus proposal' which provides a package of amendments to eight existing regulations. The changes proposed in the omnibus regulation concern fisheries technical measures and control rules. On ...

A central objective of the reformed Common Fisheries Policy adopted in December 2013 is the obligation for fishermen to land all their catches, and thus end the practice of 'discarding' fish. The Commission has proposed a package of amendments to existing legislation, in order to review the specific measures which conflict with this new obligation.

Discarding was considered by the European Commission a serious problem in European fisheries and one which must be addressed as a high priority. The aim of the present study is to provide a comprehensive analysis of the discard problem on small-scale fisheries in Europe in order to put forward recommendations and policy-relevant advice for decision-makers.

Reviewing European stock status in relation to MSY targets. - A roadmap for a feasible landing obligation and MSY approach in EU mixed fisheries ...
