Waste Management in the EU : Recovery of Energy and Raw Materials from Municipal Solid Waste

Analiză aprofundată 01-08-2002

Municipal solid waste is just part of the huge amount of waste that Europe produces every year. The EU adopted an integrated waste management strategy for this kind of waste. According to this strategy, raw materials should be recovered from waste and reintroduced in consumption and production cycles before treatment. Waste with high calorific value, and for which recycling is not opportune, can be incinerated if the energy produced by this process can be recovered. Inert waste can be disposed of in controlled landfill sites. This report describes the waste treatment options that aim to recover raw materials and energy and gives a general view of integrated waste management implementation in all EU Member States.
