The Committee on Development organised a High-Level Panel on "Global health? Local answers: resilient health systems and medical training" within the European Development Days. The panel took place on 21 June.

The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted global inequities in access to healthcare and vaccination as well as structural weaknesses of the health sector in developing countries. Africa is particularly hit by major diseases other than COVID-19, which are seeing a resurgence while 96% of its vaccines are imported. How can technology transfers and capacity-building offer a response to these challenges?
Resilient health systems rely on qualified health workers, which in turn requires improving the capacity for their training and the quality of their education. This panel will explore how EU initiatives could contribute to more resilient, sustainable and accessible health systems and training and will provide insights on policy responses as well as best practices from the field.
