Great power rivalry is intensifying in the Indo-Pacific. The EU has responded by enhancing its ties with the ten member states of ASEAN, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, to the level of a 'strategic partnership', and setting out its own Indo-Pacific strategy. [...]

[...] Both the EU and ASEAN find themselves squeezed by accelerating geo-political competition - liable to have their interests pre-empted by China or the US, of which the fallout from the AUKUS partnership can be seen as just one example. As China persists in encroaching on ASEAN members' territory, Australia and Japan re-assert the primacy of strategic ties with the US, and ASEAN struggles to achieve a consensus view on AUKUS or the path forward in Myanmar, is the EU-ASEAN strategic partnership relevant and how can it be strengthened? And what kind of player does the EU have the potential to be in the Indo-Pacific?
