Polissamarbete
EU:s byrå för samarbete inom brottsbekämpning (Europol) är en central del av EU:s bredare struktur för inre säkerhet. Samarbetet och politiken inom brottsbekämpning är fortfarande under utveckling, och ett särskilt fokus ligger på bekämpning av terrorism, it-brottslighet och annan grov och organiserad brottslighet. Huvudmålet är att skapa ett säkrare Europa för alla i EU, i enlighet med de grundläggande rättigheterna och dataskyddsreglerna, så som parlamentet flera gånger har begärt.
EU:s medborgarinitiativ
EU:s medborgarinitiativ är ett viktigt instrument för deltagandedemokrati i EU som gör det möjligt för en miljon medborgare bosatta i en fjärdedel av medlemsstaterna att uppmana kommissionen att lägga fram ett förslag till rättsakt för att tillämpa EU-fördragen. De förfaranden som krävs för medborgarinitiativ fastställs i detalj i en förordning från 2011. Sedan förordningen började tillämpas har tio initiativ kunnat vidarebefordras till kommissionen. Straffrättsligt samarbete
Det straffrättsliga samarbetet bygger på principen om ömsesidigt erkännande av domar och rättsliga avgöranden, och inbegriper åtgärder för tillnärmning av medlemsstaternas lagar på flera områden. Lissabonfördraget har stärkt grunden för ett straffrättsligt område, och föreskriver dessutom nya befogenheter för Europaparlamentet.
