MEPs scrutinised European Commission plans on 14 September to ensure the EU is on the right path. Watch the highlights of the State of the European Union debate 2022.

Has the European Commission delivered on its promises for the EU over the past year? And what is its plan for the year ahead?

In the context of the invasion of Ukraine and soaring energy and food prices, Parliament President Roberta Metsola opened the debate in Strasbourg saying: "I think our message today will be that Europe will respond."


In the debate following Commission President Ursula von der Leyen's speech, MEPs welcomed further help for Ukraine and plans to deal with the energy crisis, including a cap on revenues for companies producing low-cost electricity. However, they called for bolder action to better support both Ukraine and Europeans and criticised the Commission's lack of reaction to the rise of extremism and disrespect for the rule of law.
