The role of the General Secretariat of the Council (GSC) is to support the European Council in defining the overall political direction and priorities of the European Union (EU) and the Council of the EU in negotiating and adopting EU legislation, developing policies, coordinating policies of Member States in certain areas, and concluding international agreements between the EU and third countries.
For more information about the European Council, the Council of the European Union and the daily activities of both, feel free to visit the Council website.
With 500 million citizens and 24 official languages in the EU, multilingualism is a cherished principle enshrined in EU law. Translation makes it possible to put this principle into practice.
LING, the Translation Service of the GSC, consists of 24 language units which, together, cover all of the EU official languages. Our main service (timely and high-quality translation of core documents) supports the functioning of the GSC and helps to maintain the cohesion of the European Union, allowing every citizen to access EU legislation and political documents in all EU official languages. Our work directly affects the quality of legislation that applies in Member States.
When performing translation assignments for LING, contractors should be mindful of and consult as required the following sources of reference in particular and as a matter of priority.
LING has prepared a number of translation briefs with considerations to be borne in mind when translating the different types of text produced by the Council Secretariat:
The general arrangements for the provision of translation services under EP TRAD PPP4 MONOLINGUAL are set out in the tendering specifications and in the framework contract concluded between the European Parliament and each of the contractors selected following the tendering procedure. Within the abovementioned general framework, please find below links to the rather more specific arrangements for the conduct of interaction between LING and contractors who provide LING with translation services under the lots in which LING is participating.
